Big and Cool!

Wow... lots is happening... can't get my thoughts together... busy weekend...

First things first... I discovered the greatest invention since the invention of inventions thanks to an inlaw. FREE SELF PUBLISHING!!! Go to Lulu.com to check it out... it's really everything it says it is, a way for starving artists to publish their work professionally at no cost. The company only makes a profit if you sell books/cds/photo collections... so for example, I set the cost of a book at $10.00 and they deduct printing costs and a small commission per book (20% sounds like a lot but remember they don't get anything until you do) and you get a royalty check if anyone purchases the book.

So...

I did it. I put together poetry that I've had for years (including some selections from a past book that my University published for me in 2001).

INTRODUCING: maybe this time...
What: A collection of poetry
how long: 56 pages
color cover: yeah
sweet back cover: oh yeah
sweet author photo: heck yeah
cost: $10 (i would make about $3.50 per book after printing costs and comission is deducted)
where: www.lulu.com

Download the preview by going to my storefront which you can find by typing in my name (Andrew Anderson)

So cool... so cool... I won't make anything off of this but I might just have to order one for myself so I can see what the whole thing looks like.

All y'alls should do this... John M. for the photos, Fred K. for his music compositions, Mike G. for his music (solo pop projects anyone?), Annie T. for her artwork, etc... we are a congregation of artists...

Okay gotta go... at work... no time... papers due...

A+

I was thinking you could do this for anything... you could do CD's although I think CD baby might have a lower base cost (but lulu.com does offer bulk discounts if you yourself pre-order...)

the problem for you might be that you wouldn't be able to produce a CD that had the chorus of an already copyrighted song because it primarily caters to exclusively original work... but all that aside, if you had all of your own original material without borrowing at all from secondary sources, this would be perfect.

If you check out the FAQ's it will tell you all about that stuff.

Sheet music is a great idea however... if you uploaded your sheet music into your file space on the site and had it all bound together into an 8 X 11.5 booklike mass... you could easily enable people to do one of two things...

1. Download a copy of your file for no charge whatsoever if you charged no royalties whatsoever for the printed version (this kind of answers your second question... yes I could have sold it for less had I chosen to cut my own royalties... the base cost per book was 5.65 I believe)

2. Purchase a print copy for whatever price you wanted + the base cost (5.30 for a basic 8 X 10 format I believe...)

You really can set ANY price you want for a download, you can't set any price below the basic print cost for a printed version, but that's just the way it works... free publishing for you and a small cost for anyone who wants to buy.

Okay... wordy response, but I hope a helpful one.

See ya tomorrow!
